To start off with, you will need a good commerical food to give your crabs a tiny dose of daily. I use a mixture of Hermit
Haven brand crab food pellets, and Crab Island brand hermit crab food powder. Whatever commercial food you decide to use,
glance at the ingredients list before you buy to make sure it doesn't contain ethoxyquin in it- even as a perseverative. That
is harmful to crabs.
commerical food I use:
no link for the hermit haven food.
Now, a diet of just commerical food will not work for hermit crabs. They also need a mixture of other foods. Fruits and
vegtables are best, along with peanut butter- the crabs love that stuff! Meat is all right, but dairy is a HUGE NO! Hermit
crabs can die from dairy foods because their digestive systems can't handle it.
Cuttlebone is also a good idea to give your crabs. One of my crab's favorite recipes are:
1 tsp of peanut butter
a slice or two of strawberries
piece of cuttlebone
powdered hermit crab food sprinkled on top of the sticky peanut butter
Things like popcorn(no butter) and salty chips are OK, but only as ocassional treats.
There are some sites on the internet where you can find more specific recipes for your crab's delight.
